There’s something special and bare about single origin coffees from family-owned coffee farms, and this Costa Rica coffee is a great example. We had the opportunity to visit this farm to source this coffee. It is grown by gracious family that cares deeply about the coffee they produce. Oscar and Francisca Chacón are masters of their craft and have been willing to push the boundaries in coffee growing and processing.
Las Lajas’ Origins & Partnership with Silver Bridge Coffee Company
After the tragic loss of their father due to pesticide-caused illness in 1980, Oscar and Francisca made the conscious decision to do what their hearts told them was best for their family. The two began growing coffee beans organically, and named their new Costa Rican coffee farm Las Lajas.
This decision to farm coffee organically was difficult at first because there were no premiums paid for organics at the time. The two risked financial stability. As pioneers, the Chacón family saw the value in building a healthier coffee farm focused in naturally-grown and processed crops that reap high-quality coffee fruits.
Today, many farmers and cooperatives benefit from the risk Oscar, Francisca and other farmers took many years ago. Las Lajas was one of the first Costa Rican farms to produce organic coffee and remains one of the only certified-organic farms in Costa Rica.
We had the privilege to visit their beautiful farm and fell in love with this Costa Rican coffee so much we brought it home with us to share with you. The way it is naturally processed imparts a honey sweetness followed with a bit of fruitiness. This taste of this select specialty Costa Rican coffee will make you want to travel to the Chacón Las Lajas farm, too!
